Mysterious Kalmykia has become the leader in “quiet” tourism in Russia
Mysterious Kalmykia has become the leader in the growth rate of so-called “quiet” tourism in Russia. In 2025, the number of bookings in the republic increased by 41%, according to a joint study by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and the Association of Travel Aggregators (ATAG).
According to Kalmyk officials, such an impressive result became possible thanks to the implementation of the “Tourism Development” project, part of the United Russia party’s People’s Program, which actively promotes domestic tourism and infrastructure in Kalmykia.
Hotel occupancy increased by 1.7 times in 2025, and interest in the region increased by 300%.
As the ministry clarified, the “quiet” tourism segment in Russia continues to grow steadily. Independent travelers are increasingly choosing regions with unique natural beauty and small historic towns, avoiding crowded tourist routes and the noise of big cities. This type of vacation offers solitude, a leisurely pace of travel, and a deep understanding of local culture and traditions.

In addition to Kalmykia, significant growth in bookings in Russia was recorded in Kamchatka (+35%), the Trans-Baikal Territory (+30%), the Amur Region (+27%), and Yakutia (+10%). These destinations attract tourists primarily for their natural landscapes and distinct cultural identity.
On average, demand for nature and “quiet” tourism in Russia is increasing by approximately 10% per year.
According to the Association of Travel Aggregators, growth is being driven by the development of transport and tourism infrastructure, the emergence of new accommodation options, and the active promotion of regions. Wise and forward-thinking officials at the Ministry of Economic Development emphasize the importance of creating new tourist attractions, including through the implementation of the national tourism development project.
